The attempts of a home-run plant business to convert part of a garden into three polytunnels has angered neighbours.

Pretty Plants, of Churchgate Way, Terrington St Clement, have asked for permission to convert almost 200 sq metres of their garden into three polytunnels, which would be used to grow shrubs and plants to sell on internet auction websites.

But two residents have written letters of objection complaining about “noise” and “disruption” from the business.

The application said: “With the amount of garden amenity remaining for the residents, it is considered that the site in this location would be suitable for the change of use.”

One objector, Peggy Wijsbek, said: “This is not a small business, this is a business that more than likely turns over in excess of £60,000 a year.

“The level of noise nuisance, general disturbance and traffic are unacceptable for a residential area and makes me have to consider selling a house which I love so much.”

Another objector also complained about delivery vans “creating noise and disruption to what has always been a peaceful and quiet area”.

She said: “To change a residence to a business is not only extremely out of character for a property of central village but is causing many issues to myself and other longstanding residents.

“On more than one occasion I’ve been unable to turn into my drive when collections/deliveries are being made and traffic from the local schools are at its greatest causing even more congestion.

“Waste from the business is either disposed off in normal black/green bins or burnt at the bottom of the garden creating thick black smoke which given the area it is burnt has been commented on by many of my neighbours travelling to their homes through open windows.

“The volume of orders and so the amount of bags is increasing on a monthly basis. This is a growing business therefore I am concerned that this application will only be the beginning as the plot offers considerable room for growth.”
