THE Hush nightclub, on Nene Parade, Wisbech, has been demolished to make way for new homes as part of the award-winning Nene Waterfront Regeneration project that aims to breathe new life into the town centre.

David Humphey and Son, of Gorefield, won the contract to demolish the structure with a £25,000 tender. All the steel in the building will be recycled and the bricks and mortar will be crushed and used as ground fill on the rest of the Nene Waterfront Regeneration site.

The site had been a nightclub for about 10 years before Fenland Council negotiated the acquisition of the site last year in order to knock it down.

The demolition now clears the way for the development of the waterfront into high-quality modern apartments on a pedestrian priority boulevard-style Nene Parade that will set the tone for about 300 homes to be built on the 20-acre waterfront site.

The site had undergone a number of nightclub reincarnations in the last decade as Summit, Club Mist, Jack's and Hush. For many years before that it was known as the Riverside Rooms, which was a popular snooker hall.

Councillor Mac Cotterell, portfolio holder with responsibility for the Port of Wisbech, said: "The acquisition and demolition of the old nightclub is yet another milestone in this ambitious regeneration project that is already beginning to transform the economic fortunes of Wisbech and Fenland as a whole.
