Shoppers were left stunned when a hot air balloon floated over the car park of Tesco in March.
In a video posted on social media, the balloon can be seen flying over cars and people’s heads just meters from the supermarket on Hostmoor Avenue.
Police were soon called to the scene to rescue the pilot who was coming to ‘a bumpy landing’ when he lost control.
“Officers were made aware of two balloons decreasing in height and coming to a bumpy landing over Hostmoor Avenue, March yesterday (Sunday January 14),” said a police spokesman.
“On arrival PCSOs located the pilot and helped him gain control of the balloon enabling his passengers to disembark.
“The rescue truck soon arrived and staff were on hand to load the balloon into the truck.
“Special thanks must go to the group of local youths who ran to the help of the pilot and tried to steady the basket before the police arrived.”
An eyewitness said: “Wondered why my dog was barking, they were literally above my head. I had to run to get my phone.”
A second witness said that the hot air balloon landed near Cobblestones restaurant in a field.
