The Wisbech South by-election saw a huge swing back to the Tories – their share of the vote increasing by a whopping 32 per cent, to 64 per cent.

Cllr Hoy polled 1,020 votes in yesterday’s by-election to make it a swift return to Shire Hall.

UKIP, meanwhile, saw their share of the Wisbech South vote plummet by 20 per cent, to 19 per cent.

Susan Carson came second in the by-election, with 298 votes.

Labour’s Dean Reeves had 219 votes, while Lib Dem candidate Josie Ratclife polled 61 votes.

The victory means the Tories have moved closer to taking back overall control of the county council, which was lost in the 2013 elections. The party now holds 33 of the 69 seats.
