Gigantic pumpkins adorned the grassed area outside Chatteris Parish Church when the Chatteris Allotments Association held their annual pumpkins and vegetables show on Saturday 26th September.

The pumpkins attracted plenty of interest from passers-by as well as the allotment holders who entered the competition and there was plenty of friendly rivalry.

The vegetables were weighed, measured and judged by guest judge Paul Bellamy, a member of the Cambridgeshire Self Sufficiency Group.

One pumpkin was so large that it took a team of men to load it onto a trailer for weighing and transporting purposes. The show included a competition to guess the weight of the pumpkin, which was grown by John Richardson, and it was later revealed that the orange monster weighed an impressive 230kgs.

In all there were 17 categories of vegetables and flowers which the allotment holders, from the Honeysome Road allotments, ranging from best bouquet to funniest vegetable. The top three places in each category attracted points and certificates and at the end of the morning the person with the most points and overall winner was Jack Constable, who was presented with an engraved trophy and tin of sweets. In second place was Mr. Richardson and there was a tie for third between John Tuck, Graham Newstead and Carole Clark.

Trophies were also presented for the largest pumpkins with Mr. Richardson’s entry gaining the Largest Pumpkin Grown Undercover prize and Mr. Constable taking home the Largest Outdoor Grown Pumpkin trophy.

There are still a few allotments available to let at Honeysome Road and anyone interested should contact Joanna Melton on 01354 695166 or email chatteriscouncil@btconnect.com.
