Hundreds of pounds – including charity and memorial funds – were stolen from a pub in March during the early hours of Wednesday (June 4).

The Coachmaker’s Arms pub on Station Road, March, was broken into at around 1am and the offender(s) responsible allegedly broke through one of the back windows in the kitchen.

Alcohol, a personal safe, money from fruit machines, cash for a memorial fund and even a young boy’s charity sponsor money was stolen in the burglary.

A staff member said that the wires to the CCTV had been cut and the hard drives that stored the videos had also been stolen.

The incident happened on the night of England’s World Cup game against Colombia and Maria Fance, who works at the pub, said that’s why the burglars though it would a good night to strike.

Another member of staff described walking into the pub in the morning as “shocking”. She said: “I came through the front door and opened up the blinds.

“I noticed that the fruit machines had been broken into and the till had been moved.

“I went out the back and saw the back window had been forced open - it was then that I realised we had been burgled.”

The pub was shut on Wednesday morning as forensics investigated the crime scene.

A post on The Coachmaker’s Arms Facebook page said: “They stole £155 of Mary Denche’s memorial fund and £42 of a little boy’s charity sponsor money so they really are the scum of the earth.”

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We were called at 9.43am on Wednesday (July 4) to reports of a burglary at the Coachmaker’s Arms, Station Road, March.

“Cash has been stolen from the premises. The fruit machines have also been broken into and the cash from inside them has been stolen.”

The pub’s Facebook post added: “I’m gutted that some scumbag could rob the pub, and charity money that everyone so generously donates to.
