A CASE, perhaps, of 'if you can't beat them, join them?' Among winners in the Waterless ward for Wisbech Town Council was Conservative candidate Richard Fulcher.

Mr Fulcher is known in the town for being a butcher but probably even better known for being at the centre of a long-running planning row which came to a crashing conclusion when bulldozers destroyed a home built illegally near Tydd St Giles.

The barn was finally demolished after Fenland District Council gave Mr Fulcher more than a year to pull down the property himself.

At the count, a buoyant Mr Fulcher impressed upon a colleague his renewed enthusiasm for contesting the demolition, and looks forward, no doubt, to bending the ear of any others willing to listen to his ranting about the unfairness of it all.
