Improvement works are a hit

RESIDENTS of Mount Pleasant Road, Wisbech, are delighted with the residential and environmental improvements currently being put in place to ease traffic congestion in advance of the closure of Nene Parade as part of the Nene Waterfront Regeneration Scheme.

On-street parking bays have been created along Mount Pleasant Road and residents in council homes have been provided with vehicle access to their properties, block paved driveways and off-street parking bays as well as new fencing where appropriate.

Private home owners have been offered the same level of improvements at 50 per cent of the cost of the works.

In addition, new street lighting has been provided along the road and along Eastfield Way and an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point was provided at the junction of Mount Pleasant Road and Eastfields Way.

Also included in the contract, awarded to Ringway Infrastructure Services, was the replacement of grassed areas which had for years been churned over by drivers parking their cars on the verges.

With the new on-street parking bays and the abundance of off-street parking, the road will be clearer and vehicle owners no longer run the risk of damage from passing trucks.

Works were carried out following extensive consultation with residents to ensure that their views were taken into consideration and that they were happy with the proposed improvements.

The works were funded by Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, East of England Development Agency (EEDA), the European Regeneration Development Fund administered by Go-East and English Partnerships.

Councillor Geoffrey Harper, leader of the council, who inspected the works last week, said: "We consulted widely with residents and businesses in the area to ensure that we were able to incorporate their concerns and ideas into the final plans. The result has been an outstanding success and it will help to relieve the traffic congestion in the area.
