A man was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after a vehicle caught fire inside a Whittlesey car repair building and workshop yesterday.

Crews were called to the blaze at Cock Bank to find smoke coming from a single storey industrial building at around 4.15pm.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus contained the blaze and stopped it from spreading to the rest of the building.

They used two hose reels to extinguish the small blaze, which started in a vehicle that was undergoing repair.

Karl Bowden, station commander, said: “The fire started in one of the vehicles that was undergoing repair but thanks to the quick response and the firefighting actions of those first on scene, the fire was contained and was stopped from spreading to the rest of the building.”

Positive pressure ventilation fans were also used to clear smoke from the building.

The cause of the fire was accidental and crews returned to their stations by 6.15pm.
