A former head boy of Chatteris Community College has been named the most inspirational teacher in Lincolnshire.

MMike Smith, 26, was nominated by pupils and teachers where he works as head of geography at Deepings School.

“It was a real honour to be put forward for it. I do work really hard to make lessons as lively as possible by linking in to current world events and social media,” he said.

He even once booking Zoolab, an educational company that brings rain forest animals into classrooms.

“Field trips are my passion to make sure geography is put on the map as a fun subject to learn,” he said.

“I am very organised and work really hard to make sure students want to participate and get involved not just in geography in a class but in relating to outside the classroom too.”

In the four years he has been teaching at the Deepings St James school, near Peterborough, he has arranged trips to Iceland, Morrocco and closer to home Hunstanton and Hull.

The award was judged by Maples Solicitors in Spalding who asked pupils and teachers to nominate inspirational teaching staff.

Mr Smith said: “The fact that students were involved in nominating makes this award feel more special.”

Born and brought up in Chatteris Mr Smith completed his A levels and then took up a place at Birmingham University where he obtained a geography degree, followed by teacher training and a Masters degree focusing on the value of field trips.
