Two inspirational teenagers are cycling from Wisbech to the Norfolk coast to raise awareness and money for multiple sclerosis as one of the boys is a young carer for his sister who suffers with the condition.

They are also raising funds for Macmillan Research in the event called the Conor2Coast challenge.

Connor Cunningham comes from a family where he is a carer and helps out with his sister, eight year old Lacey, who has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Conor Cox comes from a big family and helps out with his younger brothers and sisters on a daily basis. He is diagnosed with ADHD but through sheer determination has strived to manage this.

The pair attend the pupil referral unit at Wisbech where pastoral tutor Lisa Gregory said: “The type of young people we get are those that have had a variety of obstacles put in their way during their lives and as a last ‘resort’ are referred to us to try to give these young people a brighter future.

“We have two amazing young men who will themselves tell you that throughout their lives they have always had some form of struggles or another.

“Both boys wanted to desperately do something to help make a difference to those affected by illness every day so have come up with the challenge of completing a bike ride called Conor2Coast.”

The event is a 41 mile ride from the County School, Wisbech, on July 28 to Heacham.

Joining them is headteacher Mark Rix and site officer Andy Simpson.

Connor Cunningham said: “Me and my brother recently organized a fundraising event where we raised £1095 for my sister, Lacey, trust fund as she was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

“When Lacey was diagnosed with MS I was devastated and I would do anything to help her so we organised a football match.

“The one thing I worry about for the future is that she will not be able to walk and it can paralyse her. This all happens because of the attacks she has, so by taking part in this charity bike ride I hope to raise awareness of the effects, not only on the individual but also families of those that suffer from Multiple Sclerosis.”

Conor Cox said: “Macmillan Cancer Support is great. They offer help to people suffering from cancer and their families when they really need it and they have helped people I know.

“At first I was going to do the bike ride on my own with my dog but then one of my friends at school decided he would like to do the ride with me to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society as a member of his family has this illness.

“It means a lot to me to be able to do this and I am really looking forward to it.”

The boys are already planning to cycle from Wisbech to Wales next year.
