FIREMEN made a soapy splash for cash when they got their sponges out for a massive charity car wash.

The Chatteris crew raised £500 by hosing down cars instead of hosing down fires for the all day event.

The money will go towards the Fire Fighters Charity, the UK’s leading provider of services to enhance the quality of life for retired fire service personnel and their families.

“The crews worked really hard at the event,” said group commander Jon Neish, service co-ordinator for the Fire Fighters Charity.

“It is great to see their efforts were well received by those residents that attended.”

The Chatteris car wash was one of four fire station car washes taking place across Cambridgeshire, the others being at Ely, Papworth and Gamlingay.

The total raised by all four events was £1,500.

The next county fire fund raising event is the Ladies Driving Challenge at Alconbury Airfield on Sunday May 12 where participants can drive a range of fire engines, tractors and HGVs. For more information on taking part visit
