A burglar who was released early from a prison sentence and deported back to Lithuania was able to return to Cambridgeshire within days –and arrested within days on suspicion of assault.

Quite how Marius Siurkus, 32, managed to return to easily was not explained by Cambridgeshire Police who confirmed today he has been sent back to a British jail to complete his original sentence.

Siurkus, 32, was jailed for a year in June, alongside Mantas Pronckus, 27, for a burglary in Eastfield Road, Peterborough, in March.

But on August 3, he was released and deported to Lithuania.

However just 10 days later police in Peterborough saw Siurkus in the city and identified him as a suspect in an assault and making threats to kill case. The offences were alleged to have happened on August 9.

PC Sye Roberts and PC James Marshall tracked him down to an address in St Martin’s Street, Peterborough.

While arresting him on August 15, the officers noticed that floorboards at the property had been lifted and further investigation revealed the jewellery that had been stolen in the Eastfield Road burglary.

The jewellery, described as “irreplaceable”, has now been returned to the victim’s daughter as the victim died in June.

A police spokesman said: “Siurkus has been recalled to prison and will be removed from the UK after serving his sentence. No further action was taken regarding the assault and threats to kill allegations.”

DC Jason Hancock, who investigated, said: “We will continue to track down and arrest those responsible for burglary and tackle offenders who ignore deportation orders.

“One pleasing outcome of this case was the recovery of the jewellery from the burglary in March. The victim’s daughter was over the moon to have it back, although sadly her mother passed away in June.”

Siurkus and Pronckus burgled the property in March after noticing the victim leave in her car while they were walking past.

Siurkus was arrested on March 17 at his home in St Martin’s Street, Peterborough, and Pronckus detained seven days later at his home in Swanspool, Peterborough.

On June 24, Pronckus was jailed for two years and Siurkus for a year at Peterborough Crown Court after both pleaded guilty to the burglary at an earlier hearing.

Pronckus had been jailed in September 2012 for committing two burglaries in Peterborough and had been released early from HMP Peterborough but breached the condition not to return to the UK before his sentence lapsed.

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson is perplexed by the ease at which Siurkus was able to flout his deportation.

He had earlier said how he was “seriously concerned. We need to ensure these people are properly deported to Lithuania and not allowed to return”.

The Home Office refused to discuss individual cases but claimed the UK border is “one of the most secure in the world”.

An official explained how Britain had invested heavily “both in staff and technology” to improve security and keep out those with no right to be here.
