An open garden event in March raised over £1,600 last month.

Maria Nielsen Bom opened her Japanese-themed garden on Henson Road on the weekend on August 19 and raised an impressive £1,641 for the National Garden Scheme (NGS).

She said: “The bonsai were a great attracting, bringing in visitors from a 40-mile radius. We’d like to thank everyone for their support.”

The NGS has been inviting garden owners to open their outdoor spaces since 1927 for good causes.

A spokesman said: “Britain’s most beautiful, memorable gardens for around the cost of a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

“Over the last 90 years, we’ve donated £50 million to charities across the UK thanks to the warm generosity of our garden owners, volunteers and visitors – a rich blend of generosity that lies at the heart of the National Garden Scheme.”
