The driver of a double decker bus - and a passenger - died today following a collision with an HGV on the A47 at Thorney Toll.

Police say the driver – a man in his 50s – came from Norfolk: the passenger, a man in his 70s, was from Northampton.

Latest figures released by Cambs Police reveal that the number of casualties is 14 – all of whom were travelling in the bus.

A police spokesman said: “This includes two people who suffered fatal injuries, five serious and seven with minor injuries.”

The road will remain closed for several more hours – police hope it can be re-opened by 7pm.

Those admitted to hospital are being treated for broken bones and head injuries.

At least 18 other passengers were injured when the bus collided with the lorry coming out of a local transport depot shortly after 7.30am. Some witnesses have spoken of localised fog at the time.

Those admitted to hospital are being treated for broken bones and head injuries.

The driver who died worked for First Eastern Counties Bus Company and was employed at their depot in King’s Lynn.

Managing director Steve Wickers told the BBC: “I am shocked and saddened by what has happened. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased and we will be providing as much support to them as we can through this difficult time.”

Police and crime commissioner Jason Ablewhite tweeted that “I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to those affected by today’s tragic event on A47.

“I want to thank the emergency services who worked together to manage the incident, making sure those injured were taken to safety.”

The crash happened on a stretch of the A47 with a 60mph speed limit; the lorry is thought to have been coming out of the nearby Bretts Transport depot when it collided with the bus.

A police spokesman said: “Investigations continue at the scene and the road remains closed.

“People are advised to avoid the area or expect delays. Anyone travelling in the area is advised to carry water in case of delays due to the hot weather.”

The injured were taken to Peterborough City Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn.

The East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) said it had been declared “as a major incident” because of the number of patients involved and the critical injuries sustained.

The ambulance service had earlier sent several ambulances and officers, two rapid response vehicles, a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and Magpas Air Ambulance to the scene.

A spokesman said: “The clinicians cared for several injured patients, and have conveyed 16 to Peterborough City Hospital and Queen Elizabeth hospitals”

“Again, we thank members of the public for their co-operation whilst all emergency services worked quickly at the scene to help all those involved.

Mr Barclay, the MP for NE Cambridgeshire and a Government health minister, tweeted: “Concerning news locally of road fatalities and injuries at Thorney Toll.

“If any constituents are affected and need support in the coming days please get in touch via my constituency office.”
