An iconic willow tree at the bottom of Fore Hill in Ely finally succumbed to the torrid weather conditions on Friday as it fell into the road.
The tree, which stood in excess of 20 feet, blocked one lane of the city’s busiest main arteries shortly after 7.45am, leaving traffic at a standstill.
A team from Cambridgeshire Highways was called in to help remove the tree and were expected to remain at the scene for most of the day.
There are no reports of any injuries.
