Formal ID has not yet been carried out and a post mortem examination is due to take place in due course.

The news comes after family of the missing 49 year old prison officer made a plea for him to let them know he was safe and well.

Father of three Mr Fox went missing in the early hours of January 31 and was said to be suffering with post traumatic stress syndrome.

His wife, Catherine went on local radio where she made a desperate plea to her husband: “Please....being out there...we want you back...we love you so much.

“We’re not upset with you, we just want you home, and we can work this out.

“We just want him back home with us.”

Mr Fox, of Clarkson Avenue, Wisbech, who worked at HMP Whitemoor, had not been seen since about 6.20am on Friday morning at the end of January, more than four weeks ago.

He and his wife had been married for 25 years and have three children - James, 20, an 18 year old daughter Charlotte and a 16 year old son who suffers from Asperger’s.

Mrs Fox suffered a stroke three years ago and believes her illness combined with childhood experiences combined to make Mr Fox ill.

A Facebook appeal led to some reports of possible sightings in the King’s Lynn area but it is thought he may be using a different name or may have changed his appearance.

He was last seen in the Wisbech area and was wearing a black fleece with a yellow collar and National Geographic logo, dark jeans and brown shoes.

He had links to Wisbech and March.

His daughter Charlotte posted various messages on social media asking for information in a bid to trace him.

“He left the house without money or a car or his phone,” she wrote. “He is 49 and is suffering depression and post traumatic stress and has autistic tendencies.”
