AT the latest meeting of the Chatteris branch of the Royal British Legion Women's Section chairman Barbara White asked members to remember Robert McFarlane, who died in March who was a Legion member for many years and a member of the poppy appeal committee.
The chairman thanked all who helped with the food preparations and shopping for The April Party. Letters of appreciation were received from Margaret and Ken Gowler. A letter from Penny Bale was received thanking everyone who sent messages to her and the family, since the death of her nephew. Diary dates are: Friday May 26, cake stall; Sunday June 11, refreshments and music in the Brixton Room to celebrate 80 years of the Royal British Legion; Saturday June 17, tombola stall; Monday, June 19, Festival Week, Group C meeting at Salem Court (7pm); Saturday, July 15, Pennies around the poppy at the Co-op supermarket; Saturday, July 8, get-together at Littleport (coach will be laid on, enquiries to 01354 693217); Saturday November 25, county conference at Masonic Hall, Bateman Street, Cambridge.
Freda Aspinal, delegate to the national conference in April, reported that the national standard bearers competition was won by Laura Ashton, with Emma Cursley second and Heather Spence third, and that the new national chairman is Pat Valler.
Freda is taking part in the Run for Life at Peterborough on June 28 and appealed for sponsorship. She cane be contacted on 01354 695472.
There will be a garden party at Joyce Mitchell's home on Saturday June 3 (6pm) for the NSPCC. A donation of £5 will be required.
After a tea break a musical quiz was held as the speaker had to cancel at the last minute, Two teams tied, so they was a draw for the winners which turned out to be the team consisting of Jan Feekins, Betty Howlett, Voula Harding and Freda Aspinal. They won a bottle of wine each. The monthly competition for the oldest commemorative mug was won by Voula Harding. Barbara White was second.
The next meeting will be on Monday, June 5, at the Working Men's Club (7pm).
