The scandalous Sun article about Wisbech was deliberately timed to coincide with the European elections as a way of maximising the UKIP vote, so I feel entirely justified in putting an alternative view.

As Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council for the past year I can say with some authority that voting UKIP in Wisbech has led to a town that I have some affection for becoming, by far, the worst represented place at the county council.

UKIP councillors are obsessed with promoting the UKIP National cause, but rarely is their voice heard on Wisbech issues; instead they have given us racist remarks, insults to our most vulnerable children, councillors who can’t pay their council tax on time and even one pleading guilty to a criminal offence.

We also have a UKIP group Leader at Cambridgeshire who is so keen to pursue the anti foreigner rhetoric that he was willing to mislead the public about how illnesses are spread.

We have UKIP Wisbech councillors standing for election who criticise our most proactive councillors yet refuse to recognise social media and, in one case, even refuses even to use email – Wisbech deserves better county councillors.

Why is this important to the European elections? Well, the evidence from UKIP MEPs is little better. They consistently fail to turn up and vote on Euro sceptic issues at the EU – more evidence of poor representation.

A reasonable person could be excused for thinking that UKIP are there for themselves and not for the people they pretend to serve.

I know many of their supporters will talk of this as typical anti-UKIP rhetoric or claim that every party has its errant members, so I challenge any of your readers to contact me – I can provide evidence for everything I have said. I also challenge UKIP to provide me with evidence of similar levels of misconduct from any other political party in Cambridgeshire or Fenland.

History says voting for a party that has no positive record and campaigns solely on finger pointing and blame is a recipe for disaster.

If you genuinely want Euro scepticism, vote Conservative – the only party that has proven its Euro sceptic credentials through actions. If you want proof of that, read our European manifesto.
