WHILE litter-picking the river Nene from a boat with March Street Pride Group on Saturday October 30, among the bags of rubbish that we recovered (mainly bottles, cans, plastic bags and takeaway food cartons) was a soft drinks bottle, tightly screwed down, containing two letters rolled up and tied with string. One was written in a very young spidery hand; the other, more legible, saying:
HELP We are shiprked on an island
We have notgot any food or water it is so boring
Me and my cat are in desparte need of help. Im called
Jenny and my cat is called Spike for his claws are sPikey.
On are boat is all the things we needed etc (example) papper pen food
water and different stuff. Please Help
It is comforting to know that at least some children still have a creative imagination and still play games like we ‘oldies’ did fifty years ago and more! Casting messages in bottles into rivers or the sea might have been bad for the environment but it was great fun! I do hope Jenny and her cat Spike were rescued!
