THE Littleport Show has become the latest victim of the recent miserable weather, with organisers deciding on Tuesday night to cancel this year’s event.

This year was scheduled to be the comeback year for the popular show after 2011’s event was cancelled but record rainfall in May and June and above average rain in July left the committee with no choice but to cancel.

Derek Timbers, committee member, told the Ely Standard: “We are absolutely devastated but we were really left with no choice thanks to the wet weather.

“We had a site visit on Tuesday night and took a vote on it, the majority of people, although they certainly didn’t want to, felt we had no choice but to cancel it.

“The fact is, because of the wet weather the landowner has been unable to cut the grass to make into hay and with more wet weather expected in the next few days there is just no way we will be ready in time.”

Paula Law, show secretary, added: “We appreciate that you may be disappointed and apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of this decision, but hope that you will appreciate the reason behind it.

“On behalf of the Littleport Show Committee I would like to thank you for your support and look forward to welcoming you to the 2013 event.”

Held at Highfields, the show was set to feature a packed lineup of events this year, with vintage and classic cars, baby show, live bands, skate park, barbecue, photographic competition and 1,000 grand draw all set to feature.

The show is one of a multitude of annual events hit by the weather, with organisers of the Pymoor Show forced to cancel the July 7 event at the last minute.
