THE golden age of steam returned to March at the weekend when this A4 Pacific Union of South Africa caused excitement for enthusiasts.
After leaving King's Cross the ex LNER No 60009 headed along its old stamping ground on the east coast mainline before taking a route around East Anglia.
Sir Nigel Gresley introduced the famous LNER Class A4 locomotives in 1935 to pull a new train called The Silver Jubilee between London and Newcastle in celebration of King George V reaching his 25th year as king. It was designed for low consumption of coal and water on both passenger and freight services.
Grantham, Sleaford, Spalding, Peterborough, Whittlesey and Ely were all included in
Saturday's itinerary.
Despite varying the times and route, a member of March and District Model Railway Club was on hand to take this picture of the locomotive as it steamed through March.
