SOME of Britain's most notorious criminals are being given the chance to earn up to £1,200 a year while serving their time at Whitemoor Prison, March.The figures have been supplied to the Cambs Times by the National Offender Management Service after an application for information under the Freedom of Information Act.It could, for example, mean murderers such as Dennis Nielson, who was jailed for life for killing 16 men in the 1980s, producing leaflets for a children's charity.Although the prison has not given the exact figures earned for each job, it says that prisoners' payments vary from £8.50 a week, or £442 a year, to £23.50 a week, or £1,222 a year, depending on the type of work they do.Jobs include industrial laundry work, construction industry training, industrial cleaning, kitchen work, desktop publishing for charitable organisations, educational courses and recycling of plastics.The prisoners also pack power tool spares kits, propogation products, various consumer products and plastic products.Whitemoor is a maximum security jail which holds up to 500 prisoners. It is one of eight maximum security prisons within the prison estate and focuses on rehabilitation and offending behaviour.It is home to some of the most dangerous criminals in the country, including Saajid Badat, 'a leading al-Qaeda fanatic', Jill Dando's killer Barry George, and IRA terrorists.
