A FENLAND recycling firm has won permission to extend its opening hours to cope with its booming order book.
Plasgran Ltd employs 35 people at its factory at Eastwood End, Wimblington, but says its restricted hours of work means it "cannot physically meet the demands of the orders and recycling which come through the gates".
That will all now change after Cambridgeshire County Council's development committee agreed that it can now operate from 6am to 10pm, Monday to Fridays, instead of 7.30am to 6pm, and from 6am to 1pm on Saturdays, instead of 7.30am to 1pm.
County councillors agreed with the extended hours but say the early mornings and later evenings must be restricted to manual sorting and manual baling of materials.
The council is also insisting that Plasgran does not operate machinery, including vehicles for delivery and removal, at these times.
The committee heard that five objections had been raised by nearby residents, some claiming the company had breached their current permissions.
Residents also expressed concern about increased traffic causing congestion and the threat that lorry movements posed to children and horses on the road.
Fenland Council also objected because of the likelihood of extra noise and unsociable working hours, but county councillors were told Wimblington Parish Council had been consulted but did not respond.
Plasgran is a leading plastic recycling company and its recyclable products include a vast array of scrap include print, bottle, plastic pallets, crates, offcuts and trims, PVC, car bumpers, laminated materials and cardboard.
