SCHOOL memories came flooding back for March reader Julia Smith when she saw herself and fellow pupils in our issue of January 20.The picture was taken at a special social evening at March Grammar School in 1966.Invitations went out to March High School for Girls, Ely High School, and Wisbech High and Grammar Schools. The social was the first of its kind and was a great success with more than 300 youngsters attending. We asked for names of those in the picture and if anyone could remember the name of the group providing the music. Their first disc had been released by Decca a few weeks previously.Julia could name pupils, Rosemary Manser, Susan? (can anyone else supply a surname?), Alison Osborne, Christine Bradshaw, Susan Hemmaway, Eileen Smith and Elaine Garner (nee Greenwood). She correctly remembered the name of the group was Hedgehoppers Anonymous. The Whittlesey-based group had just released their hit record It's Good News Week.WHEN the headteacher of Walpole St Andrew School retired in 1963 it was a sad day for pupils past and present. The lady in question featured in our issue of January 20 when she was presented with a farewell gift. We asked if anyone could remember her.John Nobbs, of Sefton Avenue, Wisbech, contacted us to say he used to live in Walpole St Andrew and was taught by Dorothy Ayres between 1951 and 1957. Mr Nobbs' older brother Gerald has a photograph of himself and classmates with Mrs Ayres when they were aged 11 and leaving primary school to go to Marshland High School.
