GUYS and girls from two March schools got together for a special social evening back in 1966.The event, held at March Grammar School, had been arranged by a committee under the chairmanship of headmaster Mr C H Potter. It was aimed mainly at the senior pupils from the two schools. Invitations also went out to Wisbech High and Grammar Schools and Ely high School. The social was the first of its kind and was a huge success with more than 300 youngsters attending. Our picture was taken in the library where some youngsters were taking a break from dancing.Music was provided by a group whose first disc had been released by Decca just a few weeks previously. Are you on the picture? Can you put names to the faces? Did you get further chances to socialise with the opposite sex at school events? Can you name the group who provided the music at the social?AFTER 25 years as head of Walpole St Andrew Primary School, the woman in this picture was retiring from a job she loved. Many pupils who were waving goodbye were children of those who had welcomed her into the job.Pupils, parents and villagers contributed to a fund for a farewell cheque in appreciation of what she had done for so many young people. Her only regret was that she was leaving the school in 1963 and would not be there the following year when the 70 pupils would be celebrating the school's centenary. Her retirement meant a move from School House where she had lived all the time she had been at the school. Moving away from the village also meant severing her links with the village library which she was responsible for opening, and the National Savings movement.Who was the much-loved headteacher who was retiring after quarter of a century? Were you a pupil at the school? Do you have any memories of life at Walpole St Andrew School during the 25 years she was there?
