More than £850,000 was raised in Cambridgeshire for a cancer charity last year.

It has been a record breaking year for Macmillan Cancer Support in the region, with events like the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raising hundreds of thousands of pounds.

During 2013, Macmillan established a new Macmillan Information & Support Service at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and funded a variety of healthcare professional posts across the region.

The charity supported people affected by cancer in the county with financial grants and support via the Macmillan Support Line.

Lady Olwen Cass, county chairman for Macmillan Cancer Support in Cambridgeshire, said: “I am delighted to hear that the amount raised by supporters in Cambridgeshire during 2013 was over £850,000.

“Amongst our fundraising committee members, most people have either personal or family experience of cancer which means they fully appreciate the need to raise funds for Macmillan.

“We have seen people in the county organising and taking part in a whole range of fundraising activities over the past year and their endeavours have all played a huge part in our reaching this target.”

Julia Beales, fundraising manager for Cambridgeshire, said: “98 per cent of Macmillan’s income comes from public donations. With over 25,000 people living with or beyond cancer in Cambridgeshire, and that figure set to double by 2030, Macmillan is going to need to keep growing each year to make sure no one has to face cancer alone.

“We have plenty of opportunities to get involved with the local Macmillan fundraising team that range from joining one of our vital committees to holding your own coffee morning.

“In 2014, we’re particularly keen to work with more local businesses, whose support can make a real difference in their community.”
