POLICE are looking for a man who prevented burglars stealing a handbag from a 99-year-old woman in Chatteris.

The incident happened between 10pm and 10.15pm on Sunday in Whitemill Road.

Two men are believed to have got over a wall and into the garden at the victim’s home before entering through the back door and taking the handbag from the hallway.

However, as they left the way they had entered a man saw what was happening and chased after them. They escaped but dropped the handbag which he returned to the victim who was unaware the burglary had taken place.

Now police would like to trace the man, who is believed to be from the local area, as he could have important information.

Pc Phil Richardson said: “This was a crime against a vulnerable victim and I am keen to catch those responsible.

“Thankfully, this man’s quick thinking meant the victim’s handbag was retrieved, however, he may be able to help us bring these people to justice.”
