A couple’s plan to build a log cabin on their land for visitors to the Fens has been thwarted because of concerns about the state of the surrounding roads.

The Fowlers hoped to build the holiday accommodation on land North East of The Woodlands, Days Lode Road, Manea.

They received six letters of support, including one from the Manea and Welney District Commissioners, but their application was refused by Fenland District Council.

The Fowlers would have operated the holiday cabin for 10 months of the year and done all the cleaning and maintenance.

The couple’s agent, Chris Walford, said: “Mr and Mrs Fowler often get comments from friends saying their land will make an ideal location for caravans or holiday accommodation.

“The site’s location and open views across miles of Fenland fields make it an ideal spot for small scale holiday accommodation.”

A letter of support from John Heading, chairman of Manea and Welney District Commissioners, said the proposal “would bring some benefit to this thriving community”.

Another supporter said: “It would be an asset to the village, as I know many people who would like to holiday, relax and unwind there.”

But planners objected because the approach roads to the site were single car width and in poor condition.

Planners said: “The development is sited in a remote location with inadequate pedestrian links to facilities and with poor access roads.”
