Robert Sears has also asked Fenland District Council for permission to install a 2.1m security fence around the panels to protect them from theft.

The rows of panels, which would cover an area of 0.5hectares (107m by 3m), would be installed on land north east of Lynford House Farm, Days Lode Road, Manea.

Lynford House Farm is a 1,500 acre arable farm where potatoes are produced and then stored in refrigerated barns at the main farmyard.

Mr Sears uses more than 100,000kWh of energy per year, much of it to chill the refrigerated potato stores in the late summer before the potato crop is harvested.

It is estimated up to 40 per cent of the 140,000kWH generated by the panels would be used on site, with the excess electricity fed back into the grid.
