WITH reference to the proposed Bramley Line and letters relating thereto, may I say that I would love to see a steam hauled train (preferably by an ex-Great Eastern Railway engine) running along the disused line and that none of the following is intended to be al all disparaging.

I have no financial or other interests that would be to my disadvantage were the line to be re-opened.

I am not clear as to what exactly is proposed, but being an ex-March steam locomotive fireman, and latterly a driver with the Nene Valley Railway, from its beginnings at the Peterborough sugar beet factory, I can envisage many problems.

I, with a nucleus of other ex-footplate men, was required to be passed on steam at the time by a British Rail traction inspector. There was theory and practice with a heavy emphasis on the operating rule book, all equally as stringent as was British Rail, in order to satisfy the requirements to carry passengers.

The problems with a venture such as the Bramley Line will be considerable. No doubt there will be objections from various parties.

Not everyone is a railway enthusiast and the area is not exactly a scenic tourist area.

Seen any B & Bs around? Perhaps it's planned to advertise any trips to Whitemoor Prison with an intermediate halt built along Elm Road (handy for visitors or escaping inmates).

Please excuse the cynicism.

Perhaps we have here someone hoping to realise his thwarted childhood dream of becoming an engine driver.
