March town centre will sparkle with the best Christmas lights yet thanks to a three year £80,000 investment scheme to make sure the festive season is finished with a flourish.
This year brings the three year rolling investment programme to a close so that the whole town is now lit with thousands of modern LED lights.
In 2013 a total of £40,000 was spent on lights, last year £23,000 was spent and this year the final funds of £15,000 mean the whole festive season lighting show is now updated.
Clive Lemmon, March Town Council clerk, said: “In the last three years we have gradually replaced all of the old lights with new LEDs.
“The Christmas lights switch on took off properly in 2000 when we started a drive to make sure the town looked good.
“Some of the displays had got a bit tatty so we began replacing and building up our collections. Each year it has better and better.”
Thanks to councillors on March Town Council Christmas Lights committee, volunteer light fitters and plenty of fund raisers, the festive fiesta has become a highlight of the town’s calendar.
The latest lights fund raiser took place at Sainsbury’s when cadets from March 1220 Air Squadron helped at a charity bag pack which raised £630.00.
This year’s lights switch on is on Friday 27 November at 7pm.
