The March team has made car washing on a Saturday morning an annual occurrence that this year boosted the coffers of not only the Firefighters Charity but also Magpas air ambulance.

The marathon effort in the car park at Sainsbury’s March town centre on Saturday made an impressive £444.

Although the amount was slightly down on last year – and considerably down on two years ago when they raised £800 – the crews taking part recognised times are hard and were delighted with the donations they received.

“Raising more than £400 is a lot of work and requires members of the public to be generous,” said a fire service spokesman.

“The two charities will appreciate the donations made as well.”

A spokesman for The Fire Fighters Charity said: “Whether injured, ill or in need of psychological support to come to terms with the life and death situations they face on a daily basis, we exist to support the everyday heroes of the UK fire community.”
