March Lions are revving up for the town’s Summer Festival’s first ever Soap Box Derby.

The Lions are inviting racing fans to enter their four-wheeled creations as part of the festival on Saturday June 10.

The Soap Box is a racing programme that has been popular in the USA since the 1930s.

Cars rely completely on gravity to move and drivers often navigate sloped courses featuring tight bends and obstacles before coming to a stop at the end.

A spokesman said: “This is an opportunity to get involved in the fun-packed weekend.

“March Lions are inviting you all to take part – all you have to do is build a soap box – no engines allowed – and have a go.

“It doesn’t have to be a Ferrari, just a wheel at each corner and a nut behind the wheel!

“The track will be a figure of eight layout and pushes can be provided if necessary.

“Entries can be from individuals or company teams. This is an afternoon for all the family to enjoy so bring the kids and even Granny!”

Youngsters have already kick off their preparations, with members of Young People March putting the finishing touches to their wooden racer.

All entries will be invited to join the parade through March town centre on June 10.

March Summer Festival is a community event which has been running alongside the March Lions Club Gala, in its present format, for the last 16 years.

Originally the festival also formed part of the Fenland Colourscape Music Festival. Now, an open-air stage is set up in West End Park for a weekend and the programme encompasses music and activities to appeal to all ages and tastes.

The aim is to bring the community together to celebrate and enjoy local musical and dance talent.

The festival is famous for its princess, and entries to become this year’s princess remain open until Monday May 29.
