A PLAQUE is to be unveiled at March’s medieval Stone Cross to raise greater awareness about its existence.
March Rotary Club has raised about �1,000 to build a stone plinth with a plaque to inform Fenland residents of the history of the Old Stone Cross in The Causeway.
However while the plaque gives people a better perspective on their area’s past, many questions about the Cross and what it was used for still remain unanswered.
Some believe it indicates the existence of an early market, whereas others think it might have been a memorial to King Edward IV.
“Experts agree about when it was built but do not agree about its purpose,” said Peter English, who helped to raise money for the plaque.
It is thought to have existed since some time between 1476 and 1500.
The plaque, which is a gift to the town from the Rotarians to celebrate The Queen’s jubilee, will be unveiled on August 8, where The Bishop of Huntingdon, The Reverence David Thomson, will attend along with the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Hugh Duberly.
