The March Society is looking for new enthusiastic people to carry out new projects.

Society chairman Jennifer Lawler, outlined the Society’s achievements and the wide range of activities completed over the past year but said they also needed new faces.

In their AGM, members enjoyed talk by Edna Stacey who outlined the development of streets and street names in March town centre and said previously to 1882, there weren’t any street names.

She told how the main road into March was originally from the current March Road via Knights End.

One of the main obstacles to building new roads was the Hythe River - for example, the road running past the Stonecross needed to be raised. Yards End Road, Bell Metal Lane and London Road were the original names for what have now become Elwyn Road and Broad Street.

There were several bridges in the town. The Town Bridge was originally known as the Great Bridge.

Edna commented on the construction and demolition of the Pig Market in Elwyn Road. She also told how goods were unloaded from barges in West End Park but this was prohibited because of the constant mess.

The March Society’s August event is a walk around Chatteris discovering some of the town’s curiosities from the past with Julie Smith of Chatteris Past, Present and Future Civic Society on Wednesday August 6 at 7pm. Please book places by emailing info@themarchsociety.org.uk or visit their Facebook or Twitter page.
