The March Society spoke of ways to help The Woodland Trust at their latest meeting.

Throughout the March 14 meeting, members were made aware of the threat to the woodland.

Peter Vince of the Woodland Trust told members about the threats in the last 40 years beginning with tax incentives for planting trees for forestry.

Since the trust’s origins in 1972 it has grown to have half a million supporters, 300 staff, over 4,000 volunteers and is involved with companies who realise the importance of trees to people’s well-being and the environment.

The Woodland Trust aims to double native tree cover get every child to plant a tree and ensure that there is access to a wood close to people’s homes.

Activities have included: National Tree Week (November), The National Forest. A Tree for All, More Trees More Good, Jubilee Woods, Centenary Woods.

Last year they celebrated the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest.

Peter’s final piece of advice: don’t go to a garden centre and then on the way back stop for stroll in a wood. You risk bringing disease and foreign pests on your shoes or boots.
