A community spirited 14-year-old has been named as this year’s Rose Fair Queen.

Spalding High School pupil April Rose Bryant-Jenns, of Milner Road, Wisbech, has been chosen by organisers Wisbech Round Table to lead the Rose Fair parade through Wisbech on July 5.

She was diagnosed with Colitis five years ago but the painful bowel condition has not stopped her achieving the highest award for an under 18 year-old in Girl Guilding, the Baden Powell award.

She said: “Before I joined Spalding High School, I was at a Elm Road Primary School, which produces floats every year for the annual Rose Fair.

“Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be Rose Fair Queen, and now I am at that age to apply, I thought I ought to give it a try and see what happens.

“I enjoy meeting new people and have always thought that it looks fun being on a float with a pretty dress, waving and smiling, enjoying the celebrations of our annual parade.”

The 3rd Wisbech Scout Group explorer scout, who is working towards her bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, has fundraised tirelessly for Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

She has set up craft stalls to raise money for the charity and has even asked people, instead of giving her birthday presents, to make a donation to the charity.

Her mother Lisa Jenns said: “I’m a very proud mum. She did the application all herself. When she read out to me what she wrote on her application I was emotional at how much she has achieved.

“We have invited family and friends up for the day and afterwards there will be a big celebration.”
