A COPY of the Cambs Times and letters to the future were just some of the items buried in a Diamond Jubilee time capsule by children from All Saints Primary School in March.

The steel capsule was put in the ground outside the Cobblestones pub, after the youngsters spent weeks deciding just what should go into the container for future generations.

Head teacher Rachel Beeson said: “The children really took to the idea of creating a time capsule, and had lots of ideas about what should go into it. We had the capsule on our worship table for quite a long time, and the children decided to include information about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

“They also wrote about our school and their lives. The container was really attractive, and the time capsule has been a really enjoyable project over the past half a term. ”

Mayor of March, Councillor Jan French, was on hand to give the children a hand with burying the capsule, which included a jubilee medal that the Mayor had presented to primary school children. A school brochure, toy cars, a Union Flag, and a wrist band were also among the items included in the capsule. A plaque to commemorate the event will go up in Cobblestones.

Rachel added: “In the letters, the children said they were proud of their school and proud of March, it was quite moving to chose which letters should go in. The children packed the capsule, and six pupils went along to watch the capsule being buried, after they wrote letters about why they wanted to go along to the ceremony.

“We feel we are passing on history, and we are part of the future,” added Rachel.

Rob Maton, manager of the Marston’s Inns and Taverns pub, said: “The time capsule is not only a fascinating project for youngsters to take part in, but it’s also quite symbolic for us too – we only opened last autumn, so we’re still at the beginning of something new with The Cobblestones, which will be around for generations of families to enjoy.”
