The life of a jolly country vicar comes to Wisbech when one of the town’s oldest societies in town presents a stage version of a popular BBC TV series.
The Wisbech Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (WAODS) is working hard rehearsing its latest production the The Vicar of Dibley.
Society press officer, Isobel Shippey, said: “The Committee is very excited about this new venture.
“We have welcomed some new members to the cast as well as welcoming back some familiar faces.
“The cast has worked really hard on their characters and I am sure audiences will feel they are sitting down and watching the TV show.’
“We are having so much fun at rehearsals, the script is very funny, and unlike other stage adaptations I have seen of TV shows, where the play is just made up of several episodes of the TV series, the scriptwriters for The Vicar of Dibley have taken several well-known storylines and woven them into a traditional play format, making one storyline, it’s very funny and very clever. “
The play has been adapted by Ian Gower & Paul Carpenter from the original TV series written by Richard Curtis and a percentage of the royalties will be donated to the charity Comic Relief.
All the well loved characters make an appearance. Geraldine Grainger is the jolly down-to-earth female vicar of a small country village called Dibley which is inhabited by oddballs.
After overcoming the villagers initial shock of getting “a babe with a bob cut and a magnificent bosom” she helps improve the village.
The locals include the very dim verger Alice Tinker, David Horton the pompous parish councillor, Hugo his indecisive son, the incomprehensible Jim Trott, Frank the boring parish clerk, straight talking farmer Owen Newitt and the terrible cook Letitia Cropley.
Ms Shippey said: “The Vicar of Dibley is a laugh-out-loud play. Throw in all the mad cap characters TV viewers love, and a couple of TeleTubbies and you are promised a fun-packed evening.”
The show will be performed at St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Wisbech from Tuesday June 3 to Saturday June 7 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 and can be booked on the WAODS Box Office Hotline on 07857 887 059.
