THE number of travellers moving into Cambridgeshire has rocketed, with a 700 per cent increase in the number of caravans in South Cambridgeshire alone, according to the largest ever survey of travellers in Great Britain.
It found that almost 7,000 travellers were living in the seven districts studied, stretching from South Cambridgeshire to King's Lynn. Demand for authorised sites will grow, says the report, with around 500 extra pitches needed across the districts by 2010. Fenland District Council has the biggest problem with the number of illegally sited caravans, at 165.
Cambridgeshire County Council said: "The district councils will shortly be discussing their responses to the survey.
