An MP has set up rival petitions to gauge support for an anaerobic digestion plant in Wimblington.
NE Cambs MP Steve Barclay launched the petitions after hearing views both in favour and against Fengrain’s proposals.
If approved the Hook Lane plant will process 35,000 tonnes of sugar beet and maize each year to produce gas for the national grid.
Fenland Council says a full environmental study is not needed but they expect the application to tackle flood risk, noise and traffic assessments as well as landscape and visual impact appraisals.
It is not the first time Mr Barclay has offered alternative petitions - he did the same when an anaerobic digestion plant was proposed for Chatteris. The scheme was later approved.
He said: “A number of constituents from Wimblington and the surrounding area have expressed views both for and against Fengrain’s plans.
“Concerns range from the traffic the plant will generate and the problems associated with heavy tractors and trailers on the narrow Fen roads to potential smell pollution from the plant.
“On the pro side people are in favour of the application because it will be producing renewable energy.
“To avoid any suggestion of bias I have launched two petitions so that the numbers in favour and against can be accurately evidenced.”
