USE of water to generate power and potential damage to the nation's ability to monitor climate change are topics covered in two Early Day Motions in the House of Commons, signed by North-East Cambridgeshire MP Malcolm Moss. The first expresses concern at Government plans to close the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology's laboratories at Monks Wood near Whittlesey, Banchory and Winfrith, which would reduce the quality of independent advice to the Government on environmental matters, including climate change, and calls on the Government and National Environment Research Council to ensure their survival. The second notes with concern the increased incidences of flooding in the UK, urges steps to be taken to develop traditional flood plains and prevent building on land susceptible to flooding and calls on the Government to investigate up-stream measures of retaining water, including its use for power generation.
