MP Steve Barclay is on a mission – to find a home in Fenland for a Royal tree.

The MP says the Woodland Trust has been in touch to offer a tree for the NE Cambs constituency to link the area with the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy.

“Where is the best local place to put a Royal tree?” says Mr Barclay.

Wisbech Castle, a Chatteris farm or the new cemetery in Doddington are just three suggestions already put to MP Steve Barclay.

The MP said: “The Woodland Trust – a wonderful organisation in my view – has been in touch to offer a tree for the constituency to link our area with the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy.

“This seems a great idea, but begs the question – where to put it?”

He said the tree will be delivered and planted at the end of September / early October.

He is inviting anyone with suggestions to contact him at stephen.barclay.mp@parliament.uk, and the best idea will be the one put forward.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project was launched in 2015 when an appeal was made to all 53 Commonwealth nations to contribute areas of indigenous forest to be preserved in perpetuity to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.

Her Majesty officially opened the 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta in 2015, with the announcement of the project.

Wisbech Castle, a Chatteris farm or the new cemetery in Doddington are just three suggestions already put to MP Steve Barclay.

Wisbech council leader Sam Hoy suggested Wisbech Castle whilst local planning consultant Peter Humphrey thought it should be planted “to replace the tree removed from North Brink /Chapel Road/Harecroft road junction triangle at rear of Peckover House, Wisbech”.

Farmer George Munn said: “We would be thrilled to have the tree planted in our wetland conservation area at Westmoor Farm, Chatteris

“The farm is owned by Cambridgeshire County Council and would have a secured future and be situated in one of the best conservation areas on the whole county farms estate.”

Chatteris boxer Jordan Gill added his support.

“Definitely the wetland conservation area on the George Munns Jane Munns Westmoor Farm in Chatteris,” he said. “It would be great.”

Meanwhile Paula Knott has told the MP: “How about the new cemetery in Doddington? It needs a feature and would complement the jubilee gates.”
