MARCH mother and son Susan Furnell and Michael Fryett have admitted charges of assault, following an incident at the family home.Furnell assaulted a policewoman who had tried to arrest her son.Fryett assaulted his mother's partner Peter Youles, believing his mother had been assaulted by him during a row over money.Furnell, 44, of Mallett Close, and Fryett, 24, of Peterhouse Crescent, appeared before Fenland magistrates on Wednesday.Prosecuting Fryett, Helen Harmeston said Furnell and her partner Peter Youles had been involved in a "heated discussion" on January 15. Fryett had arrived, and placed his hands round Mr Youles' neck, pushing him against the wall.Mr Youles called the police. He had suffered a bruised head and a cut elbow.Prosecuting Furnell, Miss Harmeston said police went to see Fryett at his mother's home, and Furnell was abusive and aggressive. She ran at Pc Forrester, delivering a glancing blow. The officer pushed her away, and was almost burned by the cigarette in Furnell's hand. Furnell lunged at the officer for a second time and was pushed away.Mitigating for Furnell, David Chapple said his client had earlier been assaulted by Mr Youles and had been distressed when police arrived. He said: "She was particularly concerned that the police were there to arrest her son, who had sought to assist her."What is clear, is that my client did lose her self-control."Mitigating for Fryett, Mr Chapple said: "Something snapped, and he accepts he got hold of Peter Youles and assaulted him."None of this would have happened if Peter Youles had not been violent towards his mother."Furnell was fined £100 with £70 costs and must pay the police officer £50 compensation. Fryett must pay a £75 fine, £70 costs, and £25 compensation.
