Architecture students from the Neale-Wade Academy in March were given an insight into the world of construction courtesy of local housing development company, Lovell.
Eight A-Level students took a trip to Cambridge and were given a tour of a £6.75 million regeneration project, where they learnt about the construction process and infrastructure – including green spaces, cycle paths and parking.
The students also spoke to site manager, Adam Graham about how homes are costed, the planning process and the scheduling of the construction programme.
Paula Brenchley, vice principal at Neale-Wade Academy, said: “The students are producing an architectural design for their A level coursework and this visit has provided them with an excellent opportunity to see how the real world operates.
“They now understand how a building would be constructed from the ground up and the type of materials and methods applied in high-quality modern construction.”
Site manager, Adam Graham said: “Sharing our knowledge and providing young people with opportunities to extend their awareness of our industry is important to help develop the next generation of construction professionals and encourage them to get excited about construction careers.
“We believe the benefits of development programmes should extend as widely as possible into the community and organising activities like this forms an important part of that commitment.
“We really enjoyed having the Neale-Wade Academy students on site and hope to arrange a second visit next year so they can keep following the progress of the scheme.”
