Network Rail wants to install two 80kw wind turbines at its Whitemoor railway depot.

The turbines, measuring 47.5m at their peak, would generate renewable electricity which would be exported to the local distribution grid to offset Network Rail’s electricity use.

The generators would be operated for 21 years then de-commissioned and removed.

The supporting statement says: “The generators would be positioned on land forming part of the Whitemoor Rail Depot where the visual intrusion would be minimised due to the presence of an existing industrial facility.

“The scale and location of the proposed generators would be such that the degree of effect on nearby residential properties would be moderate with any impact confined to a visual appreciation of its siting.

“The scale and location of the proposed generators would be such that the impact on HMP Whitemoor from visual, noise or shadow flicker would be, at worst case, negligible.

“There are no other material planning considerations that would outweigh the overriding benefits of this proposal in providing a renewable energy source and the long term environmental benefits this brings.”
