TILLERY Park in Wisbech has taken possession of eight new benches, paid for by a £3,500 donation from Nestle Purina Ltd and additional funding from the Friends of Tillery Park.

The new benches were installed by Fenland Council staff, who have also spent the last 12 months transforming the park from a vandalised and overgrown space frequented by drug addicts and alcoholics to one that is pleasant and welcoming.

The council worked closely with the Friends of Tillery Park to create a community space that will attract local people back and drive away those people who used the overgrown seclusion to indulge in anti-social behaviour. Members of the public have not been slow in coming forward with expressions of appreciation for the transformation.

Councillor Peter Murphy, portfolio holder with responsibility for parks, said: "We are very grateful to Nestle Purina and to the Friends of Tillery Park for their help in returning this public space to the public. It is now a lovely place to sit and enjoy a tranquil environment.
