YOUR front page last week gives fresh hope that the Cambridgeshire Fens population is no longer going to be treated as second class citizens by the East Cambs and Fenland Primary Care Trust. In recent years the trust has deliberately run down the Doddington Hospital assets, and transferred them to neighbouring hospitals. It is ludicrous to build the £33million state-of-the-art hospital in the town of Wisbech. It straddles both Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, and serious cases are transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King's Lynn. This is a fine arrangement if you live in Wisbech, but a long and tedious bus route for people living in the heart of the Fens.It is therefore essential that the new hospital is built in a more central position.March meets this need, it has excellent bus and rail links to Whittlesey and the city of Ely, the capital of the Fens, and has good bus routes to Chatteris and neighbouring villages.Obviously, Doddington Hospital grounds would have been the ideal spot, being situated in a quiet rural area, and would have had space for a decent-sized car park. But if the devil must, by selling building land to finance a hospital on agricultural land, it is important that it is situated in a place giving suitable access to everyone. On purely medical grounds, it is hoped that the planners come to their senses and build the hospital where seriously ill and injured patients can arrive quickly from all the Fenland towns.RON MUNROCavalry ParkMarch
