Fenland District Council organised two new summer activity initiatives and signed up more than 500 young people to a packed programme of sport, fun and games.

The Fenland Summer Fun programme at Queen's School in Wisbech and Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey, and the 'Summer-thing Happening' initiative provided a whole range of activities to keep young people occupied and active throughout the school holidays.

Both programmes were inspired by the council's successful Easter activity programme, which attracted hundreds of young people.

The Fenland Summer Fun programme offered young people aged between six and 16 the opportunity to get involved in archery, tennis, golf, climbing, volley ball, fitness activities, and tae kwon-do. Fenland District Council organised the programme in partnership with the Big Lottery Grant Fund and Cambridgeshire County Council.

The Summer-thing Happening programme which aimed to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime through the use of sport, offered morning and afternoon sessions for 27 days of the school holidays across Fenland. Activities included dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, soft ball, tennis, football, basketball, indoor bowls and indoor curling as well as a climbing wall.

The programme, which was provided in partnership with Fenland Links, ran events for youngsters aged between eight and 16 in Lime Avenue Park and the Orchards School in the Waterleas area as well as in Wisbech St Mary, Guyhirn, Murrow, Parson Drove, Thorney Toll, Christchurch, Elm, Friday Bridge, Begdale and Coldham.

The summer was a success with many positive outcomes, particularly in the Waterleas area.

The council has had a lot of positive feedback from young people who took part in the programmes. One young person at Lime Avenue said "I would love to do this all the time as it is fun and great."

The success of these activities is hoping to be repeated in October during half term.

Cllr Steve Garratt, Portfolio Holder for Young People, said: "It is wonderful to see that so many young people are keen to get involved and take an interest in such a wide range of activities. These two new initiatives have certainly proved to be hugely popular.
